描述All organisms--from the AIDS virus, to bacteria, to fish, tohumans--must evolve to survive. Despite the central place ofevolution within biology, there are many things that are still poorlyunderstood. For Charles Darwin, the driving force behind allevolution was natural selection. More recently, evolutionarybiologists have considered that many mutations are essentiallyneutral with respect to natural selection. Many questions remain. Aremolecular differences between species adaptive? Are differenceswithin species adaptive? Modern biotechnology has enabled us toidentify precisely the actual DNA structure from many individualswithin a population, and thus to see how these DNA sequences havechanged over time and to answer some of these questions. At the sametime, this knowledge poses new challenges to our ability tounderstand the observed patterns. This exciting volume outlines thebiological problems, provides new perspectives on theoreticaltreatments of the consequences of natural selection, examines theconsequences of molecular data, and relates molecular events tospeciation. Every evolutionary biologist will find it of interest.

Inferring Selection and Mutation from DNA Sequences: The McDonald-Kreitman Test Revisited,e analysis suggests positive selection for observed amino acid replacements at ADH and is highly significant for selection against the observed amino acid replacements at .. Small amounts of negative selection are detected in synonymous sites even after allowance is made for base-dependent mutation.

Gene Trees with Background Selection, imulations based on the coalescent process demonstrate that such background selection will rarely result in rejection of the neutral model using Tajima’s D statistic. Models with recombination are also considered.
