Contribution of non-leguminous biofertilizers to rice biomass, nitrogen fixation and fertilizer-N usunt of BNF (46 kg N/ha) was obtained for bacterial treatment, followed by bacteria + . incorporated treatment. The study indicated that use of biofertilizers, along with a low input of chemical-N fertilizer, is useful for increasing rice yield, fertilizer-N use efficiency and BNF in rice grown in flooded soil conditions.

Prospects for facilitated evolution of effective N,-fixing associations with cereals: comparative pene. This chapter discusses these modes of colonization and the probable need for a stepwise process of facilitated evolution of selected diazatrophs and plants before an effective association can be achieved.

Biological nitrogen fixation by endophytic diazotrophs in non-leguminous crops in the tropicsted with N levels (60 kg N ha.) much lower than the incorporation level normally present in this plant (around 250 kg N ha. per 18 months). The same happened with most other cereals and forage grasses, even though they do not obtain sufficient N from BNF for maximal yields.

Functional analysis of a cloned , homologous gene of , Yu62. This suggested that . probably participated in the activation of . genes in .. The . gene was mutated by inserting a .. gene. Some insertion mutants lost nitrogenase activity. In one of these Nif. mutants, 78% of the nitrogenase activity was restored by the . gene. Whether the . acts as a .-like gene needs further study.
