描述Out of European revolutions and social upheaval, an extraordinary society of literate, pious, and prosperous English Puritans flowered in seventeenth-century New England. This wonderfully readable history recreates the world of Puritan New England and places it in the broad sweep of history. The book provides a fascinating look into Puritan society, with sailors, sinners, women, children, and Native Americans joining the usual Puritan ministers of the seventeenth century. Combining remarkable primary sources with an enjoyable narrative, this book reveals the New England Nation in its fullness and complexity, and reveals striking parallels with the America of today.

New England Blossoms,s to command more than a glance of international attention, the isolated English outposts that greeted JohnWinthrop and his government must have looked frail to European eyes that had grown used to seeing colonies wither and die.

Subduing the Indians, tand. Following this war, Indians conveniently disappear from Puritan history except for their episodic roles as allies or foes in the wars with New France for control of North America. New England’s natives gave way—as if they were human underbrush—to make way for the founders of a great nation.

The Great Migration,Puritans poured out of their troubled homeland and into New England. By 1642 when the English Civil War brought the exodus to an abrupt end, the 21,000 religious purists of the great migration had created a thriving, vibrant Puritan civilization dedicated to reforming a corrupt world.

,Women in a Man’s World, wanted to live a godly life and be redeemed for eternity and they all viewed life through the eyes of the ministers and magistrates—a small cadre of educated men. Women were simply female versions of their husbands.

Protestant Reform,History is rich in irony. Historical triumphs have a habit of breeding tragedy—of sowing the seeds of failure. Great leaders rise through virtue then fall through pride. Great empires collapse because they conquer too much to defend. History is full of rising and falling, of conquering and collapsing. Fate loves paradox.
