Polarization-Maintaining Fibers,two nearly-degenerate fundamental modes with electric fields that are orthogonally polarized along the principal x- or y-axes on the fiber z-axis. Although each mode has nonvanishing components along all three axes, in the usual paraxial ray approximation, the electric polarization is predominantly linear and transverse.
