GABA and Glycine: Ion Channel MechanismsCNS) have been studied for 30 years, it is only recently that some understanding of the membrane mechanisms underlying the transmitter actions of these substances has been achieved. Chapter 2 reviews the cellular physiology of GABA and glycine based upon studies ., in acutely prepared slices of CNS tissue, and in peripheral ganglia.

Norepinephrinelar to epinephrine was responsible for the acceleration of the heartbeat produced by sympathetic nerve stimulation, and Cannon, who established that an epinephrinelike substance is the chemical mediator liberated by sympathetic nerve impulses at neuroeffector junctions. Von Euler subsequently identified the substance in question as norepinephrine.

Opioid Peptides: Central Nervous Systembe produced by microinjection of opioids into the lateral ventrical (Henricksen et al., 1978; Snead and Bearden, 1982). A primary goal of opioid research is to understand the actions of opioids on integrative activities of the nervous system, both in terms of the circuitry involved and the ionic conductance mechanisms affected by these drugs.

Excitatory Amino Acids: Membrane Physiologyate and homocysteate show relatively little difference in potency it is easy, in retrospect, to appreciate the disappointment this lack of specificity must have generated. This ubiquitous excitatory action of acidic amino acids initially led Curtis and Watkins (1960) to suggest that these substances were unlikely to act as synaptic transmitters.

Acetylcholineter in the brain and instead plays what has come to be known as a neuromodulatory role; i.e., it operates on single neurons by increasing or decreasing the potency of the more conventional synaptic inputs (see Bloom, 1980).

Somatostatinnded. It is now known to have a major role in regulating the secretion of thyrotropin-releasing hormone, glucagon, and insulin and in modulating many aspects of gut function, and it probably functions as a neuroactive substance in both the peripheral and central nervous systems.
