Fossil mammals were first recorded in the Manonga Valley during the 1920s and 1930s (Stockley, 1929; Grace and Stockley, 1930; Williams and Eades, 1938) but substantial collections were not made until the Wembere-Manonga Paleon-tological Expedition (WMPE) first visited the area in 1990 (Harrison and Mbago, this volume, Chapter 1).

Introduction: Paleontological and Geological Research in the Manonga Valley, Tanzania, field program of geological and paleontological research in the Manonga Valley of north-central Tanzania (Fig. 1). Although the occurrence of fossil sites in the Manonga Valley was first recognized in 1929 (Stockley, 1930; Grace and Stockley, 1931), there was little subsequent paleontological explo
