描述In contrast to books on specific bioactive compounds, this bookdeals with the role of mevalonic acid metabolites (isoprenoids andtheir derived structures) in metabolism, development, and functions oforganisms, which, though diverse, show various levels ofcommunication. Different disciplines are brought together in adiscussion of the messenger functions of terpenoids within and betweenorganisms belonging to five biological kingdoms: bacteria, fungi, plants, insects, and vertebrates (including humans). .The present volume covers evolutionary aspects of terpenoids in plantphysiology, plant-insect relationships, semiochemicals, and inlife sciences, with special emphasis on cancer research and treatment. The book provides proposals for multidisciplinary model systems forthe study of interrelationships of organisms utilizing terpenoidmessengers, and discusses novel strategies for insect control andmultifactor treatments of cancer utilizing terpenoids. .This book is of interest to scientists, and students at an advancedlevel: biologists, plant breeders, pharmacologists, specialists inmedical fields, especially oncologists, physicians in general, andanyone with a basic biochemical and physio

Specific properties of terpenoids,. In all these cases, terpenoids or their isoprenoid intermediates have specific binding sites to membranes and to terminal groups of a protein, in which the three-dimensional structure of the functional group is in close relationship with the dimensions of the isoprenoid structure of the messenger

Pironng the .-acting factors that are thought to be required for selenocysteine (Sec) insertion are RNA binding proteins that interact with the SECIS element. In addition to several proteins which bind non-specifically, this element is specifically bound by SECIS binding protein 2 (SBP2), and this intera

Paul Harrewijn,Adriaan M. van Oosten,Paul G. M. Pirone site selenocysteine residue coexist in vertebrates. Such selenoperoxidases have sporadically been detected in lower animals, while GPx homologs having the active site selenocysteine replaced by cysteine are more common and appear to be the only representatives of the family in plants and bacteria.

Paul Harrewijn,Adriaan M. van Oosten,Paul G. M. Pironh a cardiomyopathy called Keshan disease in humans. This prompted us to search for selenoproteins abundant in skeletal and cardiac muscle, which led to the discovery of selenoprotein W (SelW). This small (87 amino acid) protein contains one selenocysteine residue and exists in four forms. One type h
