描述Nationalism in Eastern Europe offers a thorough application of theories of nationalism in an analysis of the recent national revivals and conflicts in Eastern Europe. The book discusses both microsociological theories from social psychology and economics and macrosociological theories from sociology and political science. In a comprehensive comparative analysis these theories are applied to the late-Twentieth-century experiences of Estonia, Moldova, Croatia and the former Czechoslovakia. In doing so, the authors arrive at generalizable explanations of both the prevalence and the potential fatality of nationalism.

The National Revivals in Croatiad led to a bloody and violent civil war in Croatia. The events in Croatia and in the rest of Yugoslavia were covered intensively by the Western media. One of the most common explanations offered by journalists was that the end of communist rule took the lid off national aspirations and old hatreds.

The communist regimes were overthrown, and soon afterwards the most visible sign of Soviet dominance, the units of the Soviet army, were withdrawn. It was a time of great hope. People expected
