A Dying Story: Told and Retold,ries with other modern interpretations. The first step appreciates the beauty and complexity of the stories in their own light, and the second highlights the difficulty these very stories pose for contemporary scholars. This chapter attempts to accomplish the first of these tasks; the subsequent two chapters fulfill the second.

Dying to Die: Bioethical Interpretations,he story of his dying. In this way Chananya’s dying and death become the exemplars par excellence, the models after which and against which subsequent end-of-life care is and should be shaped and measured. In the view of many scholars, contemporary medical care at the end of life should comport to how a Jewish bioethicist reads this story.
