Founded in 1954 by art historian E. P. Richardson and art collector Lawrence A. Fleischman, the archives is devoted to collecting, preserving, and making available primary source material documenting the history of art in the United States. More than fifteen million items strong, its collections comprise the world’s largest single source for letters, diaries, financial records, unpublished writings, sketchbooks, scr- books, and photographs created by artists, critics, collectors, art dealers, and art societies— the raw material for scholarship in American art. The archives has served as a catalyst for research that has enlarged the scope of American art history.
