描述.This volume opens by providing a comprehensive overview of the use and regulation of metals in our society, metal properties, and available testing methodologies. Common and uncommon metal allergens and sources of exposure are then reviewed in depth, detailing allergic responses and paying special consideration to select patient populations. In the general population, the prevalence of metal allergy is high. Environmental sources of metal exposure include jewelry, clothing, electronic devices, coins, leather, diet, and occupational exposure. Metal allergy may result in allergic contact dermatitis and systemic contact dermatitis, as well as several less common manifestations. Further, metal allergy has been associated with device failure and/or dermatitis following implantation of medical devices and dental implants. As metals are ubiquitous, this book will be indispensable for a wide range of clinicians and investigators. This handy reference will meet the needs of all health professionals and investigators who are interested in metal allergy and its diagnosis and management. .

Metals and Corrosionlayer in everyday materials. The thermodynamically most favorable state of a metal can be predicted by the use of Pourbaix diagrams, and the nobility of a given metal can be evaluated at standard conditions by using the electrochemical series. We describe how electrochemical studies of a given metal

European Standards Developed in Support of the European Union Nickel Directiveive in 1994. The purpose of this legislation was to establish a nickel release limiting value, which would prevent primary nickel sensitisation. The limiting value specified was 0.5 μg/cm./week, which is applicable to nickel-containing consumer articles having prolonged and direct contact with the s

Metal Exposure Regulations and Their Effect on Allergy Preventiono protect human health, limiting the elicitation of allergic disease (secondary prevention) may be necessary. For metal allergens, only nickel and chromium have been subject to significant legal restriction to limit allergy, notably in the European Union. The trigger for both was an unacceptable inc

Deposition of Metals on the Skin and Quantification of Skin Exposureexposure via the skin route. Skin deposition of metal is described by characteristics of exposure such as the frequency and duration of contact with metallic objects or metal-containing products. The condition of the skin and the mechanisms of interaction between the metal and the skin also play a r

Innate Immune System Response in Metal Allergy: Toll-Like Receptorse—not just dependent on an adaptive immune response, but also requires a supplementary signal that activates the innate immune system. Many metal allergens are capable of delivering both signals—the mandatory antigenic stimulus and an innate proinflammatory signal. In recent years, the molecular mec

Acquired Immunity in Metal Allergy: T Cell Responseshypersensitivity reactions in which T cells are the key players. In this chapter, we describe how metals are presented to T cells and discuss the current literature on the role of CD4. and CD8. T cells in contact allergies to metals.
