Atmospheric Fronts: An Observational Perspective which fronts are embedded ranges from meso-. to macro-. or synoptic (2000–10,000 km). Fronts are shallow phenomena, with depths typically 1–2 km. Because of this geometrical configuration, horizontal variations in the cross-front direction greatly exceed those in the along-front direction.

Mesoscale Convective Complexes in the Middle Latitudesied by utilizing routine synoptic upper-air and surface observations. An extensive climatology of convective systems (Bartels .. 1984) indicates that smaller mesoscale systems occur much more frequently than the larger MCCs discussed here.
