描述Not many years ago, problems of membranes and transport attracted the attention of but a few dozen enthusiasts, mainly physiolo gists who recognize~ the significance of membranes for the stabilization of the general steady state of organisms. The first symposium organ ized some fifteen years ago could boast of the attendance of perhaps fifty scientists (the remaining fifty were not yet sure that membranes was the topic of their choice), ranging in specialization from physical chemistry to bacterial genetics, who clairvoyantly decided to study what now has become the number one subject at most congresses of biophysics, physiology, and even biochemistry and microbiology. As is the case with many rapidly developing fields, the interest in membranes and transport seems to be growing out of bounds and the whole field of membra no logy, interdisciplinary as it is, has penetrated into the realms of a number of branches of physics, chemistry, and biology. Its subject is primarily biological and, although much has been done in the world to increase the "exactness" of biology over the past thirty years, one cannot strive for a rigorous mathematical description of biological phenomena since

Transport by Special Mechanisms,There is considerable evidence showing that, along with carrier-mediated processes of transport of organic substrates or ions there are rather special mechanisms which permit the uptake or release of substances both in the low and in the high-molecular weight range.

Membranes, perseding the often quoted dictum of F. Engels that life is a form of existence of proteins. Indeed, various types of membranes serve as the locale of most enzyme activities of a cell, provide the physical basis of locomotion, intercellular contacts, secretion and uptake, are involved in protein syn

Thermodynamics of Transport,at utility in the exploration of unknown physicochemical mechanisms of transport phenomena. Although thermodynamics itself does not describe the microscopic details of transport mechanisms, it shows which of the various hypothetical mechanisms are thermodynamically permissible. An admirable “Introdu

Transport of Nonelectrolytes, inct mechanisms: (1) Nonspecific “diffusion” through the lipid and, in a limited degree, through the polar parts of the membrane; (2) specific “carrier” transport—this category includes, as a subgroup, systems where the transported substance is altered chemically; (3) mechanisms involving profound,

Transport of Ions,. potassium chloride, separated by a cation-permeable membrane. The membrane may be made, e.g., of a cation-exchange resin and contain pores lined with fixed negative charges. If the pores are sufficiently narrow and the density of fixed charges high, only potassium ions can move through the membran
