The papers address in this volume cover all the main directions of research in membrane computing, ranging from theoretical topics in the mathematics and computer science to application issues. A special attention was paid to the interaction of membrane computing with biology and computer science, focusing both on the biological roots of membrane computing, on applications of membrane computing in biology and medicine, and on possible electronically based and bioinspired implementations..

Polymorphic P Systems the rules of every region are defined by the contents of interior regions, rather than being explicitly specified in the description of the system. This idea is inspired by the von Neumann’s concept of “program is data” and also related to the research direction proposed by Gh. Păun about the cell nucleus.

Membrane Systems Working in Generating and Accepting Modes: Expressiveness and Encodingstems working in accepting mode with that of membrane systems working in generating mode. Features like determinism, presence of promoters and of cooperative rules are considered. The comparison between some of the considered classes of membrane systems is carried out by defining encodings of one class into another.

An Integrated Approach to P Systems Formal Verificationchecker, against a Kripke structure representation. The method is applied to a basic class of P systems with transformation and communication rules using either maximal parallelism or asynchronous rewriting strategy and for a special variant of P systems with electrical charges, but without active membranes.
