描述Surprising though it seems, the world faces almost as great a threat today from arthropod-borne diseases as it did in the heady days of the 1950s when global eradication of such diseases by eliminating their vectors with synthetic insecticides, particularly DDT, seemed a real possibility. Malaria, for example, still causes tremendous morbidity and mortality throughout the world, especially in Africa. Knowledge of the biology of insect and arachnid disease vectors is arguably more important now than it has ever been. Biological research directed at the development of better methods of control becomes even more important in the light of the partial failure of many control schemes that are based on insecticide- although not all is gloom, since basic biological studies have contributed enormously to the outstanding success of international control programmes such as the vast Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa. It is a sine qua non for proper understanding of the epidemiology and successful vector control of any human disease transmitted by an arthropod that all concerned with the problem - medical entomologist, parasitologist, field technician - have a good basic understan

Blackflies (Simuliidae)he fast-growing literature about this disease (Muller and Horsburgh, 1987: bibliography). All vectors belong to .. In this genus, as in other Simuliidae and other biting Nematocera, only the females suck blood and males are harmless. The hosts are birds and mammals (only warmblooded vertebrates are bitten).

Biting midges (Ceratopogonidae)eserved for Phlebotominae), ′no-see-ums′, ′punkies′ or simply ′biting gnats′. Some 5000 species in 60 or more genera have been described. They are distributed worldwide, with the exception of the Arctic and Antarctic.

Horse-flies, deer-flies and clegs (Tabanidae)nsmitted among humans by tabanids is the filarial worm . carried by .. As mechanical vectors of pathogens, the flies are primarily of veterinary importance, but in certain circumstances they can apparently transmit to man diseases such as anthrax, tularaemia and (possibly) Lyme disease.

Fleas (Siphonaptera) not normally parasitic but feed on organic material in the nest or lair of the host, including pellets of blood produced by feeding adults. Pupation takes place in a silken cocoon spun by the third-instar larva.

Insects of minor medical importancein such cases it seems they are only obtaining moisture from the skin, e.g. Tipulidae (McCrae, 1967); some, however, actually bite and take blood. In a less direct, but nevertheless clinically significant role, insects are the cause of entomophobias or delusory parasitosis (Mumford, 1982; Smith, 1987).
