描述The rise of the mass media and professional science makes the years before the Great War an important formative period in the history of popular science. Peter Broks explores the magazines of the time and uncovers the scientist as hero and villain; science for and against religion; animal biographies and a new empathy with nature; technology as evolutionary progress; utopian visions and degenerationst fears. Through this cultural analysis of popular science he shows how Victorian hopes turned into Edwardian disillusion.

Science and Religion,. Courage, patience, modesty, selflessness, the moral efficacy of scientific practice made scientists ideal material for that genre of moralistic literature that had been so common earlier in the nineteenth century.

Conclusion, tudy of popularisation becomes framed in terms of ‘accuracy’ and ‘misunderstanding’. It concerns itself with levels of scientific ‘literacy’ and making sure the public know (and get) the ‘right answers’. It sees in the public a deficiency which has to be made good, a gap to be plugged, a hole to be filled.

Images, tively connived the deaths of others, failed to see the dangerous implications of their work, or were indifferent to the suffering that their research might cause. Lusting after fame or fortune, their dedication often became warped into an obsession leading them from one act of inhumanity to another.
