描述This text is based on lectures given by the authors to students of the Physico Technical Institute in Moscow in the course of many years. Teaching mechan ics of continuous media to students in physics has some specific features. Un fortunately, the students rarely have enough time for this branch of science. Over a comparatively short period of time and without sophisticated mathe matics, the lecturer has to set forth the principal facts and methods of this rather important aspect of theoretical physics. The goal can be achieved only if the knowledge and intuition obtained by students in other courses has been mobilized efficiently. These observations have extensively been taken into account when classical as well as more contemporary and actively developing branches of mechanics of continua are considered. The theory of wave propagation is the most important topic in mechanics of continua for those who work in the field of physics and geophysics. That is why most attention is paid to this topic in the main text as well as in numerous exercises. The propagation of various kinds of hydrodynamic, magnetohydro dynamic, acoustic and seismic waves is considered in some detail. We b

Potential Flow the flow is potential initially (i.e., curl . = 0 everywhere), it remains so indefinitely. Of course, one can constantly observe the creation and disappearance of the vortexes in a real fluid. Nevertheless, it is reasonable to first consider some problems of a potential flow since this very often a

Flows of Viscous Fluids any time. In real flows, however, we regularly observe a production and destruction of vortexes. This is because the real fluid is a viscous one. The assumption that there is a slip at the boundary between a flowing fluid and a solid (as in the case of an ideal fluid) also turns out to be incorrect

Elements of the Theory of Turbulencelaminar currents in such flows. Flows are always laminar, according to experiment, if their velocities are sufficiently small. On the other hand, a laminar flow always turns into a . one if the velocity increases. Turbulent flow is essentially irregular. Its velocity, pressure and other parameters v

Surface and Internal Waves in Fluids is the possibility of energy transport over considerable distances without mass transport. The diversity of forces acting on the particle in a fluid causes a variety of different types of waves. In the following four chapters we will consider these waves using the linear approximation so that inter

Waves in Rotating Fluidsportant are waves related to the rotation of the Earth. The theory of such waves, as well as the development of the theory of gravity waves which takes the Earth’s rotation into account, is the main purpose of this chapter.

Nonlinear Effects in Wave Propagationrent kinds as well as different modes of waves of the same kind propagate without interaction with each other. One must bear in mind, however, that linear equations are only approximate ones and the original hydrodynamic equations are substantially nonlinear. It is important to clarify the condition
