描述This introductory textbook is based on the premise that the foundation of good science is good data. The educational challenge addressed by this introductory textbook is how to present a sampling of the wide range of mathematical tools available for laboratory research to well-motivated students with a mathematical background limited to an introductory course in calculus.

Thermodynamic Perspectives, of thermodynamics (see, for example, [436, 437]); however, their typical introduction to that topic is through courses in chemistry and physics that emphasize the study of systems at, or very near, equilibrium (see Section 15.3.1). In such courses, connections between thermodynamics and dynamical systems are seldom addressed.

Feedback and Control Systems, the control of blood pressure. Of course, the importance of feedback is not limited to physiology. Feedback mechanisms regulate population size, control climate, and even help us operate our automobiles.

Oscillations, anted oscillations, but Mother Nature seems content to exploit their benefits. Indeed, oscillations make it possible to coordinate the activities of large populations of cells, such as tissues and organ systems, through the tendency of individual oscillators to synchronize their activities with other oscillators [499, 601, 613].

Random Perturbations,es. Moreover, we have ignored the fact that all living dynamical systems are continuously subjected to large numbers of influences. For example, it has been estimated that a typical neuron in the human brain receives ≈ 10. synaptic connections from other neurons [597].

Science and the Mathematics of Black Boxes, ructure of cells (electron and scanning microscopy, 1965–1971), the structure of molecules (X-ray diffraction, 1912, and force tunneling microscopy, 1971), including the DNA helix (1963) and the human genome project (2003).

Fixed Points: Creation and Destruction, rve as parameters are changed. First, there can be changes in the stability of a fixed point: it may be stable for one range of parameter values and unstable for another range. Second, it is possible that as parameter values change, fixed points are created or destroyed.
