Grain Boundary Effects in Ceramicshe behavior of grain boundaries in these materials and in metals are becoming obvious. Sintering occurs much more rapidly than would be predicted from tracer diffusion experiments. Nabarro-Herring creep also occurs more rapidly. These and certain other phenomena associated with grain boundaries are discussed.

The Surface-Sensitive Mechanical Behavior of Ionic Crystalsace contaminants, and surface defects. These three factors, the extreme notch sensitivity of ionic crystals, and the results of some recent investigations performed mainly on NaCl, LiF, and MgO crystals are discussed in connection with Roscoe, Rebinder, and Joffé phenomena.

Dislocations in Spinels and Related StructuresO. were obtained and examined with the electron microscope. The lattice of this compound is very similar to that of spinel. Evidence was obtained of dislocations consisting of two partials. Their separation was only about 200 Å so that the other stacking faults, if present, would probably be too narrow to be visible.

Dislocation Multiplicationervations on the growth of slip bands in magnesium oxide and lithium fluoride by transmission electron microscopy and optical etch-pit techniques have suggested that jogs on screw dislocations play an important role in the multiplication.
