描述I. MASS TERMS, COUNT TERMS, AND SORTAL TERMS Central examples of mass terms are easy to come by. ‘Water‘, ‘smoke‘, ‘gold‘, etc. , differ in their syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic properties from count terms such as ‘man‘, ‘star‘, ‘wastebasket‘, etc. Syntactically, it seems, mass terms do, but singular count terms do not, admit the quantifier phrases ‘much‘, ‘an amount of‘, ‘a little‘, etc. The typical indefinite article for them is ‘some‘ (unstressed)!, and this article cannot be used with singular count terms. Count terms, but not mass terms, use the quantifiers ‘each‘, ‘every‘, ‘some‘, ‘few‘, ‘many‘; and they use ‘a(n)‘ as the indefinite article. They can, unlike the mass terms, take numerals as prefixes. Mass terms seem not to have a plural. Semantically, philo sophers have characterized count terms as denoting (classes of?) indi vidual objects, whereas what mass terms denote are cumulative and dissective. (That is, a mass term is supposed to be true of any sum of things (stuff) it is true of, and true of any part of anything of which it is true). Pragmatically, it seems that speakers use count terms when they wish to refer to individual objects, or when they wish to reident

Some Bits and Pieces, ificance of that distinction.. Count nouns are nouns like ‘label’, ‘fable’ and ‘table’, and mass nouns are nouns like ‘milk’ and ‘honey’ and ‘silk’ and ‘money’. My question is whether count nouns correspond to counting things and mass nouns to amassing stuff and also whether there is a corresponding

The Indeterminacy of Mass Predication, affects count nouns, but it occurs for distinct and independent reasons. I will not rehearse the details of Quine’s arguments; I intend only to show that mass terms satisfy the required hypotheses. I will show this in two ways: (1) there are mass terms which have distinct extensions, yet which have

Sharvy on Mass Predication, nfusing mixtures of conflicting linguistic data, conflicting conceptual intuitions, and conflicting physical analyses of the stuffs. On the Adequacy of a Type Ontology,in my ‘Four Ontologies’.. The thesis is that an ontology of types (types, on my view, include masses) may be self-sufficient and quite adequate for all our descriptive and theoretical needs.. Types (and, thus, masses), I argued, are fully real .: The Polar Bear,. The Taxpayer, Man, Dog, Oil, Gold, S

Theories of Matter, consists”. And while the .. is not the ultimate authority on words, nor is it, I believe, far wrong in this particular case. The definition is, as I shall argue in this paper, in substantial harmony with a tradition of some antiquity, according to which material objects do not constitute a somehow ‘
