Masculinity for the Million: Gender in Dime-Novel Westerns,s. The main character. For Comstock, these qualities are fantastical breaches of the social order. Accordingly, Comstock ends this passage by equating these overthrows of “the laws of God and man” with the destabilization and troubling of gender codes; he concludes that dime novels “favor violation of marriage laws and cheapen female virtue.”.

Introduction, complex set of signs. The often-voiced commands to walk, talk, act, and take it “like a man” make clear that masculinity does not reside in a male body but instead in a series of performative gestures and public presentations. Being “like a man” has little to do with possession and everything to do with performance.
