Management of Rib and Sternal Fracture Nonunions, plateaued in improvement after several months, is a nonsmoker, is willing to wean opioids, and has participated in a work-hardening program. Surgical intervention outcomes are good but the surgeon should be experienced and willing to counsel the patient that even with surgery, several months of slow improvement are expected.
