描述.Male Friendship and Testimonies of Love in Shakespeare’s England. reveals the complexand unfamiliar forms of friendship that existed between men in the latesixteenth century. Using the unpublished letter archive of the Elizabethan spyAnthony Bacon (1558-1601), it shows how Bacon negotiated a path through lifethat relied on the support of his friends, rather than the advantages andstatus that came with marriage. Through a set of case-studies focusing on theInns of Court, the prison, the aristocratic great house and the spiritualconnection between young and ardent Protestants, this book argues that the‘friendship spaces’ of early modern England permitted the expression of malesame-sex intimacy to a greater extent than has previously beenacknowledged.   .

Instrumentality: The Prison, Liberty and Writing Friendship in the Space in Between,y of the early modern prison. Tosh argues that this prison correspondence shows the ease with which a relation of mutual obligation between a prisoner and his un-incarcerated associate could be dressed with a rhetoric of intimacy and affection. He argues that the outmoded conception of ardent, selfless service propounded by Reynolds and his colleagues clashed with newer forms of service that revolved around developing ideas of professional self-advancement and meritocracy.
