描述This timely publication fills a large gap in the ophthalmicliterature which has so far lacked a monograph on the clinically veryimportant subject of macular edema. The book presents the mostup-to-date scientific concepts concerning the etiology andpathogenesis of blood retinal barrier breakdown such as tight junctionassociated protein dysfunction, and changes in fluid transportproperties of the retinal pigment epithelium. The bulk of the book isclinically oriented and addresses novel imaging and diagnostictechniques for the detection of macular edema as well as the clinicalcontext of a panoply of ocular diseases which induce macular edema, such as diabetes, other vasculopathies, uveitis, and many others. Newlight is shed on the association between highly active antiretroviraltherapy and the induction of macular edema in HIV-positive patients.Novel drug treatment regimens with steroids and carbonic anhydraseinhibitors as well as new ways of applying laser and surgicaltherapies are also discussed in detail, and practical treatmentguidelines are given. This book will be helpful for vitreoretinalspecialists as well as for the practising ophthalmologist confrontedwith patients suffering

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) in macular edema, edema secondary to diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, uveitis and epiretinal membranes. We also measured central retinal thickness before and after laser photocoagulation, in order to evaluate and follow the efficacy of the therapy.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) in idiopathic polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (IPCV),raphy (ICGA) and OCT (Humphrey Zeiss) scan. . in all 4 cases OCT tomograms acquired at the location of the typical choroidal abnormalities demonstrated by ICGA, revealed a characteristic hyper-reflectivity in the choroidal layers. . ICGA is essential to diagnose IPVC, but OCT may be able to identify characteristic reflectivity patterns.

Macular edema induced by phacoemulsification, revealed a higher incidence of blood retinal barrier breakdown. Corneal thickness was not correlated with the ultrasound energy used. .: Excessive use of power during phacoemulsification may hamper the postoperative evolution of cataract surgery.

Cyst formation in optic disc pit maculopathy, Cyst formation is an entity which accompanies the macular detachment associated with optic disc pit. The development of the cysts has been noticed after the establishment of the schisis-like separation and before or in conjunction with the formation of a lamellar macular hole which usually accompanies the optic disc pit maculopathy.

Regulators of vascular permeability: potential sites for intervention in the treatment of macular entified which mediate agonist-induced leak of the vascular endothelium. The further elucidation of these processes may be useful in the development of better treatments for breakdown of the inner blood-retinal barrier.
