One-Dimensional Scalar Conservation LawsIn this chapter we give some basic preliminaries about one-dimensional scalar conservation laws to highlight some of the fundamental issues and difficulties arising in the general theory of conservation laws. We also present some basic definitions and concepts which will be of constant use in this book.

One-Dimensional Systems of Balance Laws (Weakly Coupled)This chapter is concerned with nonlinear systems of balance laws in one space dimension weakly coupled, that is the coupling occurs only through source terms.We prove the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem in the space of functions with bounded total variation.

Equilibrium Traffic ModelsThis chapter deals with equilibrium traffic models for traffic flows. In the first section we introduce the basic assumptions common to all equilibrium traffic models; then, in the second section, we show how to construct the solution to the related Riemann problems. In the final section we discuss the drawbacks of the equilibrium traffic models.
