Developing a Logic Grammar for a Formal Application problem of developing logic grammars for formal or programming languages. Many of the techniques used in the natural language applications are of course applicable. We begin with a grammar for logic programs; in a later chapter we consider a compiler for a simple traditional style programming language.

Modifier Structure Grammarsp of semantic structure. Both features were introduced in joint research with McCord (Dahl and McCord 1983), which was motivated by treating coordination (constructions with “and”, “or”, “but”, etc.) in a metagrammatical fashion.

Further Expressive Power—Discontinuous Grammars with the added flexibility that unidentified strings of constituents can be referred to (usually through a pseudo-symbol skip(.), where . stands for the skipped substring), to be repositioned, copied, or deleted at any position. They do not need to obey, as do XG’s, any nesting constraints.
