描述At the 1980 Christmas meetings of the American Society of zoologists in Seattle, Washington, the Division of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry sponsored a symposium on the locomo tion and exercise of arthropods. This book is an outgrowth of that symposium. To our knowledge, the symposium and this volume are the first attempts to deal with all of the major modes of locomotion (flight, swimming, and pedestrian travel) among the arthropods in a comprehensive fashion. The time seems propitious to focus on arthropod locomotion. In the last decade enormous strides have been made in understand ing locomotion - both arthropod and vertebrate alike. There has been an explosion of new ideas, new techniques, and new data. These deserve greater attention and discussion than is possible in specialized journals. Hopefully this book will fill this gap; moreover, it should serve as a benchmark for newcomers to see what has happened to date and perhaps act as a launching pad for re search to come. Whatever the case, a symposium volume such as this serves to highlight our current strengths and weaknesses. In the present case it reveals the relative abundance of information on flying and walk

Ventilation in Active and in Inactive Insectsto it. The insect respiratory system displays much refinement in its control systems, and there is a diversity of mechanisms which allows different species to inhabit environments ranging from the wettest to the driest, and to change abruptly from low rates to high rates of metabolism.

Neuromuscular Mechanisms of Insect Flightct. Some of these aspects of insect flight are discussed in other chapters of this volume. In this chapter we consider three topics: (1) flight muscles and their innervation, (2) motor patterns and their possible usefulness as an indicator of metabolic costs, and (3) putative roles of octopamine in flight.

Insect Flight Energeticsly been examined. Finally, the mechanical characteristics and power requirements of flying insects should directly affect the levels of energy metabolism of insects during flight (Weis-Fogh, 1972, 1975; Kammer and Heinrich, 1978; Nachtigall, this volume; see also symposia edited by Wu .. 1975; Rainey, 1976; Pedley, 1977; Nachtigall, 1980).

Evolution of Arthropod Locomotion: A Crustacean Modeltrated the sea. The breadth of the crustacean spectrum bespeaks a wide range of locomotory abilities: swimming, walking, burrowing, climbing, and so on; the only talent that has eluded them is an ability to fly.

Decapod Crustacean Leg Coordination during Walkingten been considered as insects with four or five pair of legs than for their own peculiarity. This is unfortunate for they are intriguing in their own right, especially in regard to leg coordination, a subject I will discuss in this paper.
