描述Although limnology is a young discipline, it has, over the past century, experi enced marked growth. Its early descriptive period was a long one, given the enormous diversity of biota and environments in freshwater ecosystems. With the development of quantitative techniques came the ability to measure production rates and other parameters and to demonstrate the effects of nutrient limitation and predation on productivity and energy flow. As understanding of these phenomena grew, so too did our appreciation of the many complex chemical interactions among the biotic and habitat components of freshwater ecosystems. A recent, exciting phase of limnology, which may be called biochemical lim nology, is evolving rapidly. One of its many facets is the study of population and community dynamics at basic physiological levels. Examples are many. The integration of recent studies of food biochemistry with traditional studies of food quantity has begun to reveal the striking importance of food quality to reproduc tion and to the growth dynamics of many aquatic animals. Positive as well as negative alleleochemical interactions, already known in terrestrial ecosystems, are emerging as a major

Fatty Acids as Trophic and Chemical Markers in Freshwater Ecosystems, ics of aquatic ecosystems (.). The trophic relationships between aquatic organisms can be investigated in a number of ways, from the inspection of gut contents to the use of biochemical, immunological (.), and stable isotope analyses (.). Some lipid species (fatty acids, fatty alcohols, hydrocarbons

Seasonal Dynamics of Lipids in Freshwater Benthic Invertebrates, able on freshwater benthic organisms. The benthos of large temperate lakes often experience a seasonal variation in food supply that is similar to the high to midlatitudes of the ocean (.). For instance, in temperate large lakes the diatom bloom that eventually settles to the profundal zone of the l

Lipids and Essential Fatty Acids in Aquatic Food Webs: What Can Freshwater Ecologists Learn from Maunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), are essential for humans (.;.). These fatty acids are characterized by having their first double bond between carbon number 6 and 7 from the methyl end. In the late 1970s, it was shown that also the family of n-3 or ω3 fatty acids, characterized by having the first dou

Influence of Lipids on the Bioaccumulation and Trophic Transfer of Organic Contaminants in Aquatic the extent and mode of interaction with diverse contaminated media. The influence of lipids on contaminant uptake likewise varies according to the route by which the exposure takes place and the lipophilic character of the contaminant. Thus, it is necessary to clarify the environmental sources of c

Lipids in Water-Surface Microlayers and Foams, rlying water. The surface layer acts as an interface to the exchange of gases between air and water and is a vehicle for the transport of inorganic and organic materials between the atmosphere and the water column. Comparison of Lipids in Marine and Freshwater Organisms, structural components in phytoplankton and macrophytes and energy reserves in bivalve mollusks. Carbohydrates are barely mentioned in fish biochemistry except for glucose, which has a function in muscle energy metabolism (.).
