描述This study brings together decades of research on the modern natural environment of Washington‘s Olympic Peninsula, reviews past research on paleoenvironmental change since the Late Pleistocene, and finally presents paleoecological records of changing forest composition and fire over the last 14,000 years. The focus of this study is on the authors’ studies of five pollen records from the Olympic Peninsula. Maps and other data graphics are used extensively. Paleoecology can effectively address some of these challenges we face in understanding the biotic response to climate change and other agents of change in ecosystems.  First, species responses to climate change are mediated by changing disturbance regimes.  Second, biotic hotspots today suggest a long-term maintenance of diversity in an area, and researchers approach the maintenance of diversity from a wide range and angles (CITE).  Mountain regions may maintain biodiversity through significant climate change in ‘refugia’: locations where components of diversity retreat to and expand from during periods of unfavorable climate (Keppel et al., 2012).  Paleoecological studies can describe the context for which biodiversity persisted

Late Quaternary Vegetation and Fire History of the Olympic Peninsula how they are linked mechanistically is a major goal of Earth system science. Advances are made when there is intensive development of paleo-records and mechanistic models. The Olympic Peninsula has the potential to be such a location, as the area has received attention from the pioneering years of

Brief Review of the Archeological Record in a Context of Environmental Changein the Americas is found in the Pacific Northwest. In this very brief chapter, we examine the correlation of dates of important archeological sites with the well-dated events of the paleoenvironmental record described in Chap. 4. We give special consideration to relative sea-level history, and to th

Insights and Future Research Needsthis region should also provide some new findings. The very steep precipitation gradient, the general lack of human influence on Holocene vegetation (as occurs in Europe), and the important role of an episodic fire regime allow for researchers to infer complex interactions within the scope of changi

Postglacial Climate on the Olympic Peninsulaavoided in this chapter because they are responses to climate change and may lag behind actual climate changes by more than 100 years. In contrast, other proxies of climate, such as the temperature tolerances of beetles or midges or the isotopic composition of carbonates, should respond with much sh

Late Quaternary Vegetation and Fire History of the Olympic Peninsulatern Washington and southwest British Columbia, is presented through mapped pollen data. This taxon-level analysis provides a view into climatic gradients of the past and suggests modern analogs for periods, such as the late-glacial, that have been difficult to interpret from single sites.
