描述Modern manufacturing industry is focusing its interests on thepotential offered by the laser, in combination with other newtechnologies such as optical fibres, automation, computing andflexible manufacturing systems, to give new and powerful methods fornon-destructive testing, in-process quality assurance, laser materialprocessing and process control, and laser robotics..The greatest opportunities for the laser are in those areas whereflexibility, automation, CAD/CAM integration, precision, costreduction, and time to market are important factors. The examplescovered here are mainly drawn from the automotive industry, where allthese factors are imperative, and where the CO.2., Nd-YAG andexcimer laser sources are already making their contribution to themanufacturing process.

Modeling of Laser Materials Processingequations are solved to model the laser chemical vapor deposition of films. An axisymmetric model for laser-induced materials damage is also discussed. Finally, this chapter describes some of the unique measurement techniques using visualization and laser spectroscopy recently developed for model verification.
