描述Different conceptions of the world and of reality have made witchcraft possible in some societies and impossible in others. How did the people of early modern Europe experience it and what was its place in their culture? The new essays in this collection illustrate the latest trends in witchcraft research and in cultural history in general. After three decades in which the social analysis of witchcraft accusations has dominated the subject, they turn instead to its significance and meaning as a cultural phenomenon - to the ‘languages‘ of witchcraft, rather than its causes. As a result, witchcraft seems less startling than it once was, yet more revealing of the world in which it occurred.

Understanding Witchcraft? Accusers’ Stories in Print in Early Modern Englandcle will look briefly at how some of these sources represent witchcraft to us, and why it is represented by them in these ways. My suggestion is that the sources from which information about witchcraft comes, and the ways in which that information is used by the legal system and by witchcraft pamphl

Witches and Witnesses in Old and New Englandhcraft, not just because witchcraft exposes a belief alien to modern western mentalities (at least in terms of legal responses), but because it generated meanings which were contested and so changed over time.. Of these, there are especially few due to the modest scale of English witch trials. Yet m

Firstly, they represent a moment when a normally silent group — women of the lower orders — makes an appearance as storytellers on the historical stage. Secondly, they represent the things those women could not ordinarily say.

Circling the Devil: Witch-Doctors and Magical Healers in Early Modern Lorraine) is rather striking, while the details do seem congruent with those from other parts of Europe. There are even stronger reasons for believing that the mental universe of the inhabitants of villages and small towns in this region must be broadly similar to that across large parts of the continent. Witchcraft and Forensic Medicine in Seventeenth-Century Germany cakes to the Fessler house on Shrove Tuesday, and, in a suspicious gesture, urged Fessler to eat one large and appetizing cake in particular. After wondering whether she should accept the gift, Fessler accepted it, and took several bites. The young maid, satisfied, then returned home. Later that ev
