Laws and Constraints, Symbols and Languagesany of the ideas in my chapter “The Problem of Biological Hierarchy” (Pattee 1970b), in the third volume of ., were further developed. I would like to add here a summary of my more recent thoughts on these fundamental problems as they have evolved since writing those papers.
