Keats as a Reader of Novelsists, in which he expresses his preference for the common, earthy works of Smollett and Fielding over the idealizing novels of Scott. As the author documents, the conflict between romance and reality, long recognized as a major issue in Keats’s poetry, was closely associated with the novel in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
