描述This broad and original study of the full range of John Clare‘s work is the first to take seriously his repeated appeals to the judgement of future readers. A series of close readings reveals Clare‘s sophisticated poetics: his covert quotations, his careful analysis of the history, and his fascination with literary success and posthumous fame.

His most arduous task, a weekly or twice-weekly winter trip to Maxey (a ‘distant village’ some two or three miles from Helpston) to fetch flour, called this developing imagination into more serious service:

Introduction: Whose Clare?,spects of Clare’s biography, I attend centrally to his writings rather than to his (compelling) life-story, offering detailed readings of a broad range of the carefully constructed texts — many of them unpublished until recent years, or unnoticed by critics — in which all these related histories converge.
