What the 2012 Lower House Elections Has to Say about Japan’s Urban-Rural Dividepower, has nonetheless been considered the rural party, whereas the outgoing Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) was considered the urban party. However, this urban-rural divide has also become less clear as the 2009 House of Representatives (HR) election and now the 2012 HR election have been overwhelming nationwide victories for the incoming party.

The 2012 Election Results: The LDP Wins Big by Defaultuntil the 2013 HC election. The incumbent Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), which had taken power with an even more impressive 308 seats in 2009, retained only 57 seats this time, just barely managing second place after three difficult years in government.

The Remains of the DPJticularly hobbled the party; more damaging was the DPJ’s replacing them with its lowest-“quality” set of new candidates since 2000.. The party then performed even worse than expected. Its 57 HR seats, out of 480, reduced it to half the size of the two previous HR elections’ landslide losers, the LDP in 2009 and the DPJ itself in 2005.

Komeito—The First “Third Force”wever, may also be that Komeito is seldom perceived as fighting for policies different from those of the LDP and appeared to be locked into the coalition. As a result, the party’s image is often reduced to that of a yes-man of the LDP.

Campaign Finance Irregularities, Sex Scandals, and the Electionividual candidates even if few have become a central issue in recent national elections. The scandals also shed light on the murky world of campaign finance as well as the efforts of the LDP to tarnish the DPJ.

Keeping It Together: Party Unity and the 2012 Electionweeks immediately prior to the election, a steady trickle of MPs left the party as well. All told, despite a smashing victory in 2009 with 309 (out of 480) seats in the House of Representatives (HR), the DPJ entered the 2012 campaign with only 230 incumbents holding HR seats.

New Inter-election Campaigning Toolslandslide? Did the LDP, as an opposition party, change its parliamentary activities from 2009? If so, how did they contribute to its victory in 2012? This chapter is intended to provide tentative answers for these questions.
