描述This wide-ranging and convincingly argued study looks at the issues of and attitudes towards slavery in Jane Austen‘s later novels and culture, and argues against Edward Said‘s critique of Jane Austen as a supporter of colonialism and slavery. White suggests that Austen is both concerned and engaged with the issue, and that novels such as Mansfield Park, Emma and Persuasion not only presuppose the British outlawing of the transatlantic slave trade but also undermine the status quo of chattel slavery, slavery‘s most extreme form.

: Radical Change and the Royal Navytention of Edward Said, as I indicated in my first chapter. But his view does not take into account the change in the duties after 1807 of the Royal Navy. The Royal Navy now had a task to enforce the 1807 abolition. James Walvin speaks of this as ‘such a transformation in British behaviour’.

‘We Have No Slaves at Home — Then Why Abroad?’abolished in 1807, and British emancipation of slaves within the Empire was achieved in the 1830s. Historical controversy indeed continues as to how to explain the major change by 1833, its consolidation by 1838 and why emancipation occurred in a relatively short time.

Some Philosophers on Race and Slavery: Opposing Viewpointsnuanced approach has emerged, in which, alongside the undoubted strengths of Enlightenment thought, darker sides have also been recognized. In particular, it is possible to detect that some of the most important thinkers of the Enlightenment had fallen into racism. Richard Popkin had noted:

Conclusionld act as a future force. Each of the later novels displays an interest in the aftermath of the British slave trade in a different way. Seeing the most sombre of her novels set in the context of abolition helps to make sense of the solemn Evangelical tone of . This sombreness was not repeated in ., and in . the tone is different yet again.
