Introduction,mal, or racial politics cannot be fully understood. The Introduction clarifies the reasons for speaking of revisions of the ‘human’ rather than the ‘subject’, and why Coetzee’s novels suggest that only narrative allows for approaching the question of the human realistically.

,Method and Matter of the Revisions: Coetzee’s Posthumanist Poetic,teriality, and social practice theory—with which Coetzee’s revisions of the human resonate. I consider Coetzee’s fiction in relation to literary anthropology (especially with reference to Wolfgang Iser) and show that Coetzee’s questioning of received ideas of the human involves reconsidering the epistemic function of literature.
