描述The 34th European Marine Biology Symposium was held in PontaDelgada, The Azores, between 13th and 17th September 1999. It wasorganised by the University of the Azores in association with theMunicipal Museum of Funchal (Madeira), and the Plymouth EnvironmentResearch Centre (University of Plymouth, UK). .The selected topics, dictated by the position of the Azores in theAtlantic Ocean, were: `Ecology and Evolution on Island Shores‘, `TheOpen Ocean‘, and `The Deep Ocean‘. Each topic was introduced by arecognised expert of international reputation and these keynotereviews provide authoritative summaries of the current status of thesevery important topics in marine biology. The 35 papers which make upthis volume bring new ideas and concepts relating to the functioningof marine systems extending from the intertidal, through the pelagicrealm down to the deep sea. The book covers many aspects of thebiology of marine organisms and will have wide interest to all thoseinterested in the life of the world‘s oceans.

New records of brown algae (Phaeophyta) from the Azores Schousboe ex Bornet, . Loiseaux (Lithodermataceae), . (Kützing) Kylin (Punctariaceae), . (Kuckuck) Kuckuck, and . Reinke (Scytosiphonaceae). The species are described, and information is presented on their ecology and distribution around the island.

A sponge diversity centre within a marine ‘island’ correlated with different environmental conditions. At sites of turbulent and fast flow conditions, sponge diversity and richness were lowest, with the highest values being found at the sites of moderate and high sedimentation. Significant differences were observed in all four ecological variables
