描述The book considers some of the solutions proposed by Muslim activists and thinkers in their attempts to renew (.tajdid.) their ways of life and thought in accord with the demands of the age in which they lived. The two ways of reacting are studied – the movements led by men of action and inspiration, and the thoughts of quietist scholars who laid greater emphasis on calm continuity.  These two streams have often collided and particularly so in the contemporary age of greater violence. Other related problems are also considered: how a non-Muslim should regard the religion of the ‘other’; the ways modernization have been dealt with; and the two root causes of Muslim ‘rage’ today – the invasions of the West and the failure to reach an equitable solution to the problem of Palestine. Building on the author’s sixty-year experience researching the history of Islam, the book will appeal to students and scholars across the fields of Islamic studies, religious history and Middle Eastern politics..

Leaders of Revival in IslamThe theoretical basis of the book, this chapter constructs a model of the men who were called to lead the reform movements with their backgrounds, training, message, active leadership and the course of their lives which inspired their followers to join them. Their message was that Islam and society were in need of renewal under their leadership.

A Way of Approaching Islamic HistoryAny non-Muslim writing on Islamic history must consider their approach to the topic. This chapter considers in particular the approach of one noted scholar, Albert Hourani, who conducted numerous studies of the ways in which Orientalists wrote about Islam and about the way in which he himself wrote about the religion of the ‘other’.

Renewal AgainIn Nigeria, in Arabia and in Egypt new movements of reforming zeal emerged as threats to the state, led by convinced young men who claimed that they know what ailed society and how it could be cured. In particular groups such as the Muslim Brothers were active.

How Individual Countries Have Reacted in the Postmodern EraThis chapter looks at the way in which eight Muslim countries have faced the postmodern world under new leaders proclaiming varieties of an extreme unbending message—in Arabia, Nigeria, Libya, Daghestan, Algeria, Sudan, Somalia and Palestine.
