Moderate ischemic injury and myocardial stunningyocardial dysfunction or “myocardial stunning” [.–.]. At the other end are severe, irreversible abnormalities such as cell death (infarction). Thus, myocardial stunning should be considered as a mild, sublethal sequela of ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Myocardial tissue pH in the assessment of the extent of myocardial ischemia and the adequacy of myocod of aortic clamping. Measurement of myocardial temperature can only reflect the adequacy of the delivery of the cardioplegia solution during the initial period following aortic clamping. Furthermore, temperature is no indication of the metabolic viability of the myocardium since one can cool even a dead heart!

Role of leukocytes in reperfusion injuryrfusion. Thus reperfusion injury refers to damage caused by the reinstitution of blood flow, in contrast to cell death caused by the preceding ischemic episode. This cellular damage may be reflected as structural, functional or metabolic derangements.
