Dynamic Programming and Invariant Imbedding in Structural Mechanics,The determination of configurations of equilibrium in structural mechanics usually leads to the consideration of boundary-value problems. Unfortunately, boundary-value problems cannot generally be solved directly by numerical methods, and therefore the analyst is forced to recast the problem in a manner suitable for handling by a digital computer.

Invariant Imbedding and Linear Systems,as first used by Ambarzumian [1], and Chandrasekhar [7] who later extended the work of Ambarzumian. The principle of invariance provided a stimulus for Bellman and Kalaba [3] to further pursue the ideas of Ambarzumian and Chandrasekhar. Bellman and Kalaba called the invariance principle the method of invariant imbedding, see [3] – [6].

Cauchy Problems for Ordinary Differential, Difference and Integral Equations,tely the analysis of many important physical processes by classical methods leads to boundary-value problems, the solution of which is rarely a direct procedure. Thus we are naturally led to seek systematic methods of converting boundary value problems to equivalent Cauchy systems.
