描述.Systems and their mathematical description play an important role in all branches of science. This book offers an introduction to mathematical modeling techniques. It is intended for undergrad students in applied natural science, in particular earth and environmental science, environmental engineering, as well as ecology, environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, agronomy, and forestry.. The focus is on developing the basic methods of modeling. Students will learn how to build mathematical models of their own, but also how to analyze the properties of existing models. The book neither derives mathematical formulae, nor does it describe modeling software, instead focusing on the fundamental concepts behind mathematical models. A formulary in the appendix summarizes the necessary mathematical knowledge. To support independent learners, numerous examples and problems from various scientific disciplines are provided throughout the book. Thanks in no small part to the cartoons by Nikolas Stürchler, this introduction to the colorful world of modeling is both entertaining and rich in content.

Chapter 4 Linear Models with One Variable,In the remaining part of the book, we will exclusively deal with dynamic models. As we already noted in the introduction, one of the principal characteristics of natural systems is that they are ..

Chapter 8 Models in Time and Space,Natural systems have a spatial structure, but until now, we either com6 pletely ignored it (as in the case of the one-box model) or we described it in a highly simplified manner (as in the two-box model of a stratified lake, Example 5.8).

Chapter 2 Mathematical Models: A First Look, to familiarize ourselves with a model’s basic components, as well as with different types of models. We will learn how to construct a model on the basis of examples. For this, we will not yet need complex mathematics.

Chapter 6 Nonlinear Models, surprising diversity in the behavior of natural systems is mostly a result . processes. Despite ever more powerful computers, the behavior of many nonlinear systems can only be predicted over small periods: the weather forecast is a prime example of this.
