Semiconductor Detectors, be expended to produce an electron-hole pair in a semiconductor, while the value is ≈30 eV in an ionization chamber. The lower energy increases the number of electron-hole pairs per MeV of radiation and decreases the relative statistical variation in this number. Hence the energy resolution is increased, that is, R is decreased.

Scintillation Counters,n 1944, Curran and Baker replaced the use of the naked eye by a photomultiplier and later Kallmann replaced the small, thin crystals of ZnS by naphthalene. These two changes revolutionized scintillation detection, making it possible to detect, record, and analyze electronically the pulses produced by individual radiations.
