Sequential DecodingSequential decoding, proposed by Wozencraft [474], was the first practical technique for decoding convolutional codes. A series of versions of sequential decoding were proposed subsequently: one by Fano [135], called the Fano algorithm, and another independently by Zigangirov [494] and Jelinek [217], called the ZJ or the stack algorithm.

Distance Properties of Convolutional Codes and Encodersnce structure. The distance properties of a code or an encoder determine its error-correcting and detecting capabilities and are useful in analyzing the performance of various decoding techniques. Many of the distance parameters discussed in this chapter are also useful in selecting good encoders.

Majority-Logic Decodingntation. Its performance is sub-optimum since each of its decoding decision is based only on one output constraint length of received bits. This “limited vision” is not there in Viterbi or sequential decoding which, in principle, consider the entire received sequence before making decoding decisions.

Fixed-Redundancy Error Control Schemes frequency. In the absence of a feedback channel, error control has to rely on . (FEC) alone. Various convolutional coding and decoding techniques discussed in this book so far are FEC schemes. FEC schemes offer a constant throughput, equal to the coding rate, but their reliability degrades as the channel noise increases.
