描述Why is it that all interpretations are possible, and none is true? That some interpretations are just, but some are false? Lecercle draws on the resources of pragmatics, literary theory and the philosophy of language to propose a new theory of literary, but also of face-to-face, dialogue that charts the interaction between the five participants in the fields of dialogue and/or interpretation: author, reader, text, language and encyclopaedia. Interpretation is taken through its four stages, from glossing and enigma solving to translation and intervention.

Pragmatics of Interpretation, the rudiments of literary interpretation — to indulge in the practice, and to revel in the achievement (for the term, like many nouns derived from verbs, ‘representation’ for instance, is ambiguous between process and result).

Let Him Have It, Chris, the same thing as dialogue — will appear only too soon. But the starting-point of the argument is what linguists call the ‘situation of communication’. The classic model for this is to be found in Jakobson’s famous essay, ‘Linguistics and Poetics’.. It involves six elements, or participants:

The Reader, or: Imposture,ve already sketched, are to be found in intertext, in tradition, in the mutual beliefs that foster convention, in all that goes under the name of encyclopaedia. Proliferation there is, but within strict limits: midrash is tolerant, but not unto Ettleson.

Encyclopaedia, or: the Pragmatics of Literature,t denotes a body of belief, which is its original meaning in the works of the French . and the banal meaning it still has in contemporary sociology — Althusser’s ‘system of representations’ (in .) belongs to this acceptation.

Alter Ego,ime being at least. The concept of actor, therefore, according to tradition, ascribes a privileged place to author and reader according to the analogy between speech act and interpretation that informs my guiding metaphor. To take this privileged position into account, we might be tempted to modify the initial diagram to a slight extent:

The Author, or: Intention,le’ (vague) intend (with qualifications about recognition) to effect by .’.. The introduction of distributive, or cooperative, or perhaps even collective ‘intentions’ takes us a long way from Hirsch’s clear, if misguided, concept of authorial will-to-say as guarantee of the text’s meaning and of the correctness of interpretation.
