Satellite Observations of Solar Cosmic Rayste-borne particle detectors, it has become increasingly obvious that the solar production of energetic particles is not a rare, isolated occurrence but that the sun is essentially a continuous source of MeV particles. These appear to manifest themselves in four distinct types of phenomena.

Plasma Measurements Across the Bow Shock and in the Magnetosheath (see reviews by Ness, 1967, and Wolfe and Intriligator, 1969). Both the spatial configuration and the plasma flow pattern of the magnetosheath are found to be in basic agreement with hydrodynamic models of hypersonic flow around an obstacle (see the review by Spreiter and Alksne, 1969).
