描述There is a perception in the scientific community that the discipline of Physiology is in crisis, or at least, in a phase of profound transition and change. At the root of the problem is confusion between objectives (the biological questions to be solved) and the methods and technologies to be applied. Traditionally, ever since Claude Bernard’s concept of the “milieu interieur,” Physiology was an integrative science with the prime concern of studying regulatory mechanisms leading to adaptation and homeostasis in the presence of challenges from a dynamic internal and external environment. This study of control mechanisms can be applied on any level of fu- tion whether subcellular, cellular, and organ, but reaches its highest level of complexity with the functioning of the body as a whole and its interaction with the external environment. This involves the determination of the interaction of genetic with environmental factors and the resulting integrated body adaptation. It might seem obvious that in the pursuit of these questions any appropriate combination of techniques on any organizational level could be used. Yet the advent of molecular techniques has resulted in a preoccupation

Physiology and Behavior, to the environment an equal flow of the same. The very process of life entails this exchange with the environment. Without these in-and-out energy and matter flows, life is not possible. The water tank of Fig. 1 represents any of these flows that traverse the living body.

Functional Genomics, complex pathways that results in functioning cells, tissues, and organisms. Only by addressing and meeting this challenge can science utilize the vast potential of the human genome project to link gene to function in health and disease. To begin to address this problem, a combination of automated te

Neural Circuits and Behavior,d can go very far in satisfying this definition of explanation (but . ref. ., Chapter 6, “How Far Does Connectivity Get Us?”) and, second, to show that this “explanation” of behavior is quite inadequate and needs new terminology, new models, discovery of principles, phenomena and dependencies (which

Physiological Determinants of Consciousness, cate complex plans in anticipated future probably restrict this notion to humans. The view that consciousness depends on awareness and arises from a background of brain arousal led most commentators to conclude that consciousness is what abandons us every evening and reappears the next morning when

Biochemical Adaptation to Extreme Environments, cerns. However, the reader should be aware that the extremes of vertebrate life are bested on every front by the capabilities of invertebrates, plants, bacteria, and archaea and many excellent resources explore life at the extremes from different perspectives; selected texts include those by Hochach
