描述The Springer Handbook of Auditory Research presents a series of com prehensive and synthetic reviews of the fundamental topics in modern auditory research. The volumes are aimed at all individuals with interests in hearing research including advanced graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and clinical investigators. The volumes are intended to intro duce new investigators to important aspects of hearing science and to help established investigators to better understand the fundamental theories and data in fields of hearing that they may not normally follow closely. Each volume is intended to present a particular topic comprehensively, and each chapter will serve as a synthetic overview and guide to the liter ature. As such, the chapters present neither exhaustive data reviews nor original research that has not yet appeared in peer-reviewed journals. The volumes focus on topics that have developed a solid data and conceptual foundation rather than on those for which a literature is only beginning to develop. New research areas will be covered on a timely basis in the series as they begin to mature.

From the Cochlea to the Cortex and Back,en the system’s periphery and its cortex. Our main purpose in this chapter is to build upon the first 2 volumes in this series (Popper and Fay 1992; Webster et al. 1992) by highlighting progress made over the last decade in understanding these structures of the auditory pathway, especially when this

Cellular Mechanisms for Information Coding in Auditory Brainstem Nuclei, ntensity information is first encoded in the cochlea, brainstem circuitry must perform further neural definitions and refinements of these parameters, as well as integrate the cues necessary for the localization of sounds in space. Each of these aspects is associated not just with certain cell types

Circuitry and Function of the Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus, rallel pathways that diverge at the first auditory synapse in the brainstem, in the cochlear nucleus (CN), and then converge again, at least in a gross anatomical sense, in the inferior colliculus (for abbreviations, see Table 5.1). The CN is a well-studied collection of neural circuits that are div

Ascending Pathways Through Ventral Nuclei of the Lateral Lemniscus and Their Possible Role in Patteroles of these neurons in the largely monaural, ventral nuclei of the lateral lemniscus are not well understood, but they are intriguing. The suggestion has been made that neurons in the ventral nuclei of the lateral lemniscus are involved in pattern recognition. It is, however, difficult to pinpoin

Location Signaling by Cortical Neurons,Spatial hearing improves signal detection and aids in the segregation of multiple sources, thus improving identification of sounds. The importance of sound localization for the auditory system is reflected in the organization of the auditory brainstem, which contains several discrete nuclei that app

Feature Detection by the Auditory Cortex, rtical processing of visual information. In this view of the visual system, information from simple feature detectors in the retina (photoreceptors and retinal ganglion cells) converges at the level of the primary cortex to give rise to more complex, orientation-tuned neurons. These, in turn, send t
