Inorganic-organic Polymers for Micro-Optic Applicationsdifferent materials have to be combined on a single substrate, which leads to very complex and cost intensive processing techniques. The industrial development of high performance materials with high development costs is strongly limited by small market volumes, if the added value of down stream systems based on these materials cannot be included.

Optical Characterization of Ultrathin Polymer Films by Evanescent Lightl properties of polymer samples using plane electromagnetic waves, i.e. “normal” photons. This is demonstrated for diffraction experiments and microscopic investigations. The examples given include thin polymer films prepared by spin-coating or by the Langmuir-Blodgett-Kuhn technique.

Replication of Microrelief Structures for Diffractive and Integrated Optics as diffractive security features and in integrated optics. The direct embossing of single-mode polymer waveguide films on glass substrates has also been demonstrated and shows great promise for the low cost fabrication of integrated optical components.

The preparation and optical properties of such composite materials like the cut-off behaviour and the transparency in the UV-VIS range of the light spectrum are descripted.

χ(3) — Effects in Polymer Waveguides coupler in a nonlinear polymer waveguide made from azo-dye doped poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA). Material trade-offs for opto-optical switching in waveguides are discussed and the currently known nonlinear polymers are evaluated due to their applicability.

Electrooptical Measurement of χ(3) in Polymers with Conjugated π-Electron Systemsished χ(.)-method presents some advantages compared to wave-guiding-techniques or complicated THG and DFWM..In the investigated polymers χ. is caused by fast electronic processes in the conjugated π-electron systems and the measured values should be comparable to those obtained by all-optical methods (THG, DFWM) in the nonresonant area.
