描述The analysis of materials containing several elements used tobe a difficult problem for analytical chemists, so a well establishedsequence of wet chemical qualitative tests were performed to ensureeach element was detected. Quantitative tests could then be carriedout on the sample, according to the range of elements present. Mostanalytical chemists were very familiar with these techniques, havingbeen taugth them from a very early stage in their education andcareers. The analytical chemist can now call on a range of specialistinstrumental techniques which can detect the presence of manyelements, often simultaneously, and often quantitatively, providingrapid results on samples which, in the past, could take days. Thedrawback is that the instruments tend to be expensive, suited toparticular sample types or matrices and complex in both setting up andin the interpretation of results. Atomic absorption spectrometry,should be carried out only after the reader has read all the sections, gained some experience in operating the spectrometer and has knowledge of the safety precautions (and is willing to carry them out).

X-ray fluorescence analysis,a flame and emission of fluorescence light in the visible regime. The identification by the color of the emitted radiation is accomplished by an optical spectroscope. As humans are not able to ‘see’ X-rays, sophisticated detectors are necessary to detect the characteristic lines of the elements.

Diverse processes can occur at thin or ultra-thin film surfaces and interfaces, such as segregation and interdiffusion in semiconductor heterostructures.
